Reddit, a social bookmarking/link sharing website similar to Digg and StumbleUpon, is Reddit. You can also find content that has been voted up by others and thus selected for popularity within the community. It was created by Steve Huffman (a roommate and student at the University of Virginia) and Alexis Ohanian (Conde Nast Publications). It operates today as a separate entity and Advance, Conde Nast's parent company, is the largest shareholder.
Reddit's mission statements are to be the 'frontpage of the internet'. It does this by letting users choose the Subreddits they wish to join and then showing them the top-voted content for each community every day. If you were to set up your own Reddit account then, you would be able to select the subjects and categories you were interested in and then Reddit would show you the top content from each of those categories every day. These would include blog posts, other external links, and'self-posts' that are text posts intended to encourage discussion within the community. You can also choose to view Subreddits on their own and that way only see the latest and most popular links and discussion for that given subject.
Subreddits, like the front page, have multiple categories. The tabs include Hot' (New), Rising' (Controversial), Top', Gilded' and Promotions. Reddit users can up-vote, down-vote content and influence the content that gets seen. You will also be able comment on posts by others and engage in active conversation. This will help you to increase your 'karma on the site. There are two different karma values. One is for the content you have shared and one is for comments you have posted. Other users will be able to click on your profile and immediately see your previous posts as well as your rating. This is how your overall karma could impact the respect shown to your subsequent posts. Some Subreddits require a minimum amount of karma to post or comment, in order to avoid spam.
Moderators are responsible to oversee Subreddits. These moderators can ban users, delete posts and add tags. Anyone can create their own Subreddit. By doing so you automatically become a moderator. At the same time you then have the option to add more moderators to help you manage the page.
